Safari to Ngorongoro Crater, the world's famous safari destination

22 August 2013

The Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is the perfect place for a safari in search of the animals typical of the African continent, as it is characterized by an ideal environment that provides easy and exciting sightings. To the presence of many animals, it worth noting also the beautiful landscape dominated by the largest caldera in the world, with breathtaking views from the rim of the crater.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a very popular destination for safaris and is often present in the various nature documentaries thanks to the abundance of wildlife that this place hosts, with sightings virtually guaranteed.

Ngorongoro picture. The descent into the Ngorongoro crater reveals the immense size of this caldera, the largest on the planet, which measures about 19 kilometers in diameter and that, for the beauty of the landscape but also for the wildlife that it hosts, it is declared "protected area" and included among the world Heritage sites by UNESCO.

Ngorongoro photos. The bottom of the Ngorongoro caldera is located about 600 meters lower than the rim of the crater and, because of the physics of the air currents, most clouds remain concentrated mainly along the rim (left picture) where most of the rain falls. For this reason, within just a few hundred meters, the vegetation ranges from a green rainforest (right picture) to a savannah dominated by a large prairie with few trees (pictured left). The rainfall is, however, present even within the caldera (but with a seasonal pattern) and this feature has allowed the development of an ecosystem full of life, thanks also to the presence of numerous lakes where the animals can find water throughout the year.

Safari in Ngorongoro
Photos of Ngorongoro Crater. Ngorongoro is a well-known destination for safaris and often tourists who travel to Tanzania simply opt for a day tour in Ngorongoro, perhaps as an extension of the holiday from a seaside resort, believing in such way that they did a "safari in Africa". For this reason, like also in some other areas of the Serengeti, the traffic of jeeps or even buses can be a bit annoying, especially in high season when western countries are "closed for vacation". However, it must be added that this popularity is not simply due to the marketing rules of mass tourism, but also because of the actual beauty of the landscape and the ease with which you can spot many animals (in fact most of nature documentaries are actually shot right between these areas), not forgetting the excellent receptivity characterized by good facilities and well organized tour operators.

Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge is a resort located in a panoramic position on top of the crater. Do not forget that, despite being in Africa and near the equator, the altitude of this place is nearly 2500 meters and therefore ... it's cold (and not a little!)
