Trek from Lobuche (4930m) to Gorak Shep (5130m) and Kala Pattar climbing (5550m)
26 December 2005 - Departure time : 08:05 - Arrival time: 10:50 (at Gorak Shep)
Trekking from Lobuche to Gorak Shep and climb on Kala Pattar (5550m), for a fantastic view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and Khumbu icefall. This is without any doubt one of the best day of this Himalaya trek, because of the spectacular landscape and excellent Everest sightseeing in perfect weather from the top of Kala Pattar.
Leaving Lobuche, trekking to Gorak Shep. Right photo: a view on mt. Pumori.
Trek on the Khumbu glacier moraine. Trekking over moraines is always very funny, although the ground is very uneven and with some ice.
Photos of Kala Pattar. The black hill in front of mount Pumori is the Kala Pattar and I'm going to climb. Climbing to Kala Pattar is not difficult and is just a normal hike or trek. No actual "climbing" required, no ropes and no ice crampons.
Pictures of the Himalaya at its best weather, along the Khumbu glacier's moraine.
After a snack stop in Gorak Shep, Nepal, I climb the Kala Pattar for an unforgettable view onto the Himalayas. The small lodge (teahouse) in Gorak Shep is visible from both the pictures above.
Panorama picture from Kala Pattar onto Pumori, Nuptse, Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam (far away) and the Khumbu glacier. The mount Everest panorama from Kala Pattar in good weather, is certainly one of the most beautiful landscape of the world.
The Khumbu icefall (Khumbu glacier and moraine).
Some close-up of Khumbu glacier and other glaciers.

Back to the lodge in Gorak Shep. In these pictures, the dining room and bedroom (temperature in the bedroom was -9°C the next morning)
