Kauai, the Garden Island
13-16/08/1997
Three days trip to Kauai island by rented car. Visit the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, the world's wettest stop and the famous waterfalls from the Jurassic Park movie. Helicopter excursion to the most hidden parts of Kauai island.
A view of Lihue on the island of Kauai, with the dock and several resorts on the beach.
The Grand Canyon of the Pacific can be reach with less than one hour drive from Lihue airport. The shapes and the colors of the rock are very nice and varied and the landscape really looks like a miniature of the famous Arizona's Grand Canyon.
The walls and the bottom of the canyon.
The world's wettest spot is located close to the Grand Canyon of Pacific and the precipitations amount to an average of 12 meters (472 inches) of water per year. Of course, during my short hike in the area, it was overcast, foggy and rainy.
Several beaches on the island of Kauai. It is interesting to note how the weather changes a lot driving just a few miles from the center of the island to the beaches.
The skeleton of a strange creature on a beach.
The vegetation is very dense. In the jungle is very frequent to encounter chickens, and also pigs are often reported. Except some Scolopendra, there aren't very dangerous creatures on the islands.
A trail in the jungle. This is a paradise for who loves to take long hikes.
A nice view on a beach and on the sea.
Pictures taken from an helicopter. Unfortunately most of the pictures taken during the excursion are useless, because of the heavy motion. On the left: strange rock formations, in the center: nice waterfalls in the jungle, on the right: the rugged Napali coast.
The famous Jurassik Park waterfall.
Other views of the Napali coast, taken from the helicopter.
Sugarcane fields on the island.
A nice lighthouse.
This is the typical landscape that can be seen while driving a car on the island.
Two waterfalls, feeding a nice lake.
