Perito Moreno glacier day tour from Chile
With a 5 hours travel each way on partially paved road, it is possible to visit the Perito Moreno glacier through a full day tour from Puerto Natales in Chile (but don't forget your passport, since you are going to Argentina and back!)
A beautiful view on Perito Moreno from the airplane, showing the glacier pushing on a peninsula and dividing the Argentino lake in two sectors.

The north face of Perito Moreno and north sector of Argentino lake.
In this picture of Perito Moreno you can see the glacier acting as a dam. The south sector of Argentino lake (on the left) has a much more higher water level than the north sector (on the right).
Top photos: the stripe without any vegetation indicates the variation in water level, depending on the "dam" action made by the glacier. Normally, the water starts to dig a tunnel in the ice (left picture); the tunnel gets bigger and bigger, until the ice, and thence the dam, collepses totally. When this happens, the south sector of the lake flows into the north sector, until the water isn't levelled.

Hiking in El Calafate, before returning to Puerto Natales.
